The Green Trend in raw materials: How glycerin and Castor-based products are leading the way
In today’s market, sustainability is no longer optional, it’s a strategic necessity. Across industries, we’re witnessing a strong and lasting shift: customers, manufacturers, and regulators are all moving toward renewable, traceable, and lower-impact alternatives. This growing movement, widely known as “the green trend”, is rapidly reshaping how raw materials are produced, sourced, and evaluated.
At Castor International, we see this evolution up close. From increased interest in plant-based chemicals to heightened demand for ESG-compliant ingredients, the message is clear: the future is green, and that future is now.
What Is the Green Trend?
The green trend refers to the growing global focus on:
- renewable and plant-based materials
- biodegradability and low toxicity
- reduced carbon footprints
- full supply chain transparency and traceability
- regulatory compliance (e.g. EUDR)
This shift is driven by a combination of legislation, brand responsibility, and consumer awareness, particularly in industries such as cosmetics, food, feed, coatings, lubricants, plastics and pharmaceuticals.
Castor-based solutions at the core of the transition
Within this context, several products offered by Castor International stand out for their alignment with the green trend:
1. Castor Oil
A non-edible, renewable oil sourced from Castor beans, Castor oil is an ideal example of a natural alternative to fossil-based inputs. It plays a key role in bio-polymers, lubricants, coatings, and pharma intermediates, and supports circular supply chains in both industrial and personal care markets.
2. Cardanol
Derived from cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL), Cardanol is a bio-aromatic ingredient with low VOC and low toxicity. It replaces petrochemical resins in various applications, notably coatings and adhesives, while contributing to zero-waste by using agricultural by-products.
3. Glycerin
Traditionally a by-product of biodiesel or plant oil refining, Glycerin is increasingly valued for its versatility, renewability, and wide industry acceptance. Used in everything from toothpaste and skin care to food and pharma, Glycerin is an ideal fit for brands looking to lower their environmental impact while maintaining performance.
At Castor International, we supply Glycerin in purities from 80% to 99.7%, with certifications such as E422, GMP+, and Ph. Eur./USP. Our product portfolio supports both conventional and highly specialized applications.
Why is demand increasing for Glycerin?
Over the past year, we’ve seen a clear uptick in global Glycerin demand. This can be attributed to:
- A tightening supply chain, especially with potential shifts in biodiesel production, where Glycerin is typically a by-product
- Increased regulatory and corporate pressure to switch to biobased inputs
- Rising interest in high-purity and certified grades for food, feed, and pharma
Glycerin perfectly embodies the green trend: it’s renewable, multi-functional, safe, and compliant, provided it is sourced responsibly.
Green Legislation: EUDR and Beyond
One of the most impactful regulatory shifts reinforcing the green trend is the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
Set to apply from 30th of December 2025 onward, this regulation aims to eliminate raw materials from global supply chains that are linked to deforestation or illegal land use. It will affect multiple commodity groups, including Soy, Palm, rubber, and Timberwood, and will require:
- proof of legal and sustainable sourcing
- full supply chain traceability
- geo-location data for source crops
- strong documentation and audit processes
While products like Castor oil, Cardanol and Glycerin are not listed under the EUDR, the regulation reinforces the industry's broader move toward transparency and sustainable sourcing.
At Castor International, we have actively prepared for these changes by:
- Auditing our sourcing networks
- Strengthening documentation and batch tracking
- Partnering only with suppliers committed to sustainable farming practices
- Supporting customers with traceability documentation
