Sustainability beyond recycling: The role of bio-based materials

Body

Mechanical recycling is an important part of circularity, but it is not the only route towards lower-impact plastic materials.

Bio-based raw materials and additives can also support the development of alternative plastic formulations. Castor International has many years of experience with renewable materials such as Castor oil, Hydrogenated Castor oil and various vegetable oils.

This experience is relevant to the plastics industry, where manufacturers are exploring how renewable ingredients can reduce dependence on conventional petrochemical feedstocks while maintaining the required technical performance.

Bio-based and recycled materials address different aspects of the sustainability transition. Regranulates help keep existing plastics in circulation for longer, while renewable feedstocks can provide alternative building blocks for new material formulations.

There is no single solution for every application. The suitability of a bio-based or recycled material depends on technical requirements, availability, processing conditions and its measurable environmental impact.

How Castor International works with plastics

Castor International is developing its plastics activities by connecting materials, applications and supply chains.

Our role includes identifying suitable raw materials and compounds, building relationships with producers and processors, and supporting discussions around specific product applications.

The focus is not limited to one material category. As market conditions change, customers may need to assess virgin, recycled and alternative material streams. Each option requires careful consideration of technical performance, availability, validation and processing requirements.

By staying close to suppliers, compounders and end users, we gain a clearer understanding of what works in practice and where further development or testing is required.

The plastics market remains unpredictable, but the continued development of application-specific compounds, circular materials and more resilient supply chains is creating new opportunities. Castor International aims to support customers and partners as these opportunities develop.
