Glycerol is typically prepared by hydrolysis of vegetable / animal fat or oil. This organic fats are triple esters of glycerol with three fatty acid chains (triglycerides). The triglyceride is treated with ethanol and an amount of base,  this results in glycerol and the corresponding ethyl esters of the fatty acids.
